The man in the Gland pilgrim hostel sold me the Yellow guide to the Via Gebennensis. That’s the name of the route from Geneva to Le Puy. This Guide Jaune, published by the Association Rhône-Alpes des Amis de Saint Jacques. It’s priceless because it’s the only source of accommodation & services and everything a pilgrim might need to safely reach Le Puy. It even indicates where you can fill your water bottle. And at just 180 grams it weighs about the same as one wet walking sock.
I’ve spent the day getting to grips with the book. It’s in French and German but simple to understand and has already paid for itself ten times over. Last night I was trying to book accommodation in Geneva but all the hostels were full. The choice was between a hotel in the centre costing many hundreds of pounds or an Ibis budget hotel far out in the suburbs costing just £175. The Guide Jaune suggests the home St Pierre, a hostel for young ladies studying in Geneva which also has a small dormitory for male pilgrims. I called the number and everything is now arranged.
The Château has livened up today. I was deep into my Guide Jaune when a man who was so obviously British approached and enquired, in the most appalling mixture of French and English, where the disaster recovery conference was taking place. I referred him to reception with a knowing smile.

Always enjoyable to read of your progress each day. The hostel sounds a hoot!! Tim
I love the hostels best. Hotels can be lonely places
Glad you now have a guide book for the rest of your journey…even if it is a bit ‘worky’ language-wise. What year is it?…updated post-Covid?
If you, as someone living in ££-Land, are finding things expensive, imagine how your Aussie & Kiwi friends would manage! 😫
My rule when travelling; don’t currency convert…unless the rate works to your advantage, then smile smugly. 😏 😇
Switzerland has a crazy exchange rate, that’s the problem. I’ll probably go on a spending spree when I get home because everything will seem so cheap.
The yellow guide is 2024 but that doesn’t mean anything. Time will tell….
Hi Tim
Don’t underestimate you, your french accent is good , better than my english accent.
This night we were in Ibis budget in Lyon 85€, 20€ more before COVID.🫣
Continue to send your photos it’s good for the morale ☺️
Bonjour, the French accent is beautiful whether talking French or English. I am starting my telephone calls by saying Je suis Anglais which at least grabs attention
