Day 20 – The Black Hole of Geneva

Château de Bossey to Geneva, 24Km

I left the Château behind and continued along the Via Jakobi which runs around the grounds. After awhile the vineyards and orchards were replaced by expensive houses and eventually I saw the end of the lake and the city of Geneva with its 140m high landmark fountain keeping the inhabitants nice and cool.

The temperature is now creeping into the high 20s, there hasn’t been any rain for ages and the ground is very dry.

I also saw the huge United Nations complex. Deep underneath Geneva lies CERN’s 27Km particle accelerator and apart from all the particle physics discoveries, it’s also where Tim Berners-Lee invented the www. in 1989. No wonder the hotels are so expensive. Talking of which, the path brought me to St Pierre Cathedral. It probably has an interesting history but they didn’t have an English leaflet. However, I noticed the chair used by John Calvin so you can guess the rest.

My hostel is just opposite the Cathedral so it’s the perfect location for the pilgrim. I followed the detailed instructions to retrieve my card key which had my name and bunk number. The men’s dorm is a smallish room below the pavement level with 6 bunks and filled with air dating back to the Reformation. I forced the window open, hoping to pick up a draft from the particle accelerator but to no avail. Then one of my roommates came in and panicked that the room would soon be filled with mosquitoes and we’d all die of Malaria. I tried to reassure him that there was no Malaria in Switzerland but he was sceptical. Doubtless, the window will be sealed when I return.

OMG it’s time we gave women whatever they want. Huge procession this evening.

  1. Personally, I would choose mosquitoes over particle accelerators beneath my bunk doing odd things to me. Perhaps that’s what the local ladies are complaining about…?

    • Difficult choice but what do they have in common? They both discover black holes

  2. Shania Twain has a house at lake Geneva. Or did until her husband had an affair with her personal assistant. She divorced him and married her personal assistants ex husband!

I can read the women are angry & won’t be silenced…but what is it that is angering & not silencing them?

    Black holes….plural… 😆

  4. Philippa T

The small card that one of the women on the right is holding up says that her rapist was a good guy too (Google translation). Perhaps that’s why she (can’t tell about the others) is angry?

    • There were a few thousands on the street so possibly covered a lot of female issues. It was quite a carnival

I didn’t realise it was that big from the photo. Apparently (Google again) it’s a massive strike for equal pay?

      • It was huge – thousands of women and a lot of noise. I got the photo at the front
