Nuremberg to Neukatzwang, 13Km
The last month has been the longest rest day ever, I’ve done my cat feeding duties and yesterday I flew from Heathrow to Nuremberg with Lufthansa in 9 hours, roughly the time it takes to fly somewhere exotic. Back in the days when I worked for a living and someone else paid my travel expenses, I had a Lufthansa gold card and they would pour Champagne down my throat while preparing my duvet in the nose of their 747. But yesterday I paid over £200 one way for about 100 minutes of flying time (in economy of course). The plane was late and I was dumped in Frankfurt for most of the day clutching a voucher for part payment towards a hot dog (made from “the finest sausage” which it wasn’t), a small tin of Heineken and a bottle of water.
What a relief to find my backpack travelled with me and emerged on the conveyor belt none the worse for its journey in the hold. But even better was to see Walter & Silvia waiting for me. I walked with them last year in Switzerland, we had a fun time and continued from where we left off.
This morning we drove into Nuremberg, Silvia dropped us off at the St Jakob church where the pilgrimage to Compostela begins. I stamped my credential and then we walked a short distance into the tourist zone for a cappuccino and croissant before the day’s walk.
There’s much to do in Nuremberg. Perhaps you missed the 1947 Soviet film of The Nuremberg Trials or even Stanley Kramer’s big budget 1961 Hollywood epic, Judgement in Nuremberg. Nevermind because the great Russell Crowe is about to bring “Nuremberg” to the big screen, to once again tell the story of Germany’s darkest hours. I should have gone to the museum but in the spirit of John Cleese, I didn’t mention the war and instead we had a fine day in the forest where Walter once again identified every tree and explained their life histories, like he did last year.
If Lufthansa can get their planes running on time, I may return to visit the museum and perhaps the famous and more joyful Christmas market.

Enjoy the walk, Tim – looking forward to following your posts.
Thanks Nick, you never know what’s coming except for beer and sausage of course
Good luck Tim and enjoy the sausages and beer!
Hi David, everything in moderation, especially the sausages
Good luck Tim and enjoy the coming late summer days!
Thanks Ruedi, I hope this will be a nice gap between the heatwave and winter
That’s a lovely post, Tim.
You write so well, it’s always a pleasure to follow your pilgrimages and I like the idea of visiting for a Christmas market 🙂
Buen camino.
Hi Torin, I’m looking forward to a catch up in the autumn. Hope all is well
Glad to see that you’re back out ‘On the road again.’ Hope the weather is kind.
Hi Peter, I only saw two Proms but it’s good to return to Germany for another walk
Kia ora, Tim “On the road again…” I no longer have to wait for the next instalment of your journey. great photos, marvellous scenery and wonderful weather. Hope it stays that way for your walk, Kia kaha.
Hi Vicky, Fingers crossed for the weather as always. I’ve been lucky so far in Germany
lucky you
Nothing lasts forever especially good luck!
Hoping the weather stays good. Great to have your blogs and pictures to look forward to again.
Thanks John, hopefully there’ll be some good scenery ahead
Hi Tim, lovely to see your very green springlike trees; it’s almost spring here, I’d have expected autumn colours in Germany? Commiserations on the subject of the trials of flying; your costs and disrupted schedule seem to have exceeded those of our beloved national carrier’s last minute fares for similar distances … hopefully wandering through that stunning scenery will make it all worth it!
Hi Philippa, flying is always miserable at the time but soon over. Stunning scenery hopefully coming
Wow that cat must eat a lot… 🐱 😉
And welcome to the world of living off the mainland re plane fares. We’re held to ransom…Bass Strait may not be a huge body of water but it makes all the difference. 😏
Happy trails again Tim…I’m sure you’ll enjoy this leg so much more having the company you crave.
Love the greenery of your photos…the kanal looks like lovely ambulating!
Indeed, airfares are never set for the benefit of passengers. It’s a lot cheaper to fly home from Zurich
Delighted you are back on the road again Tim. And bringing us along with you too.
I hope to go to Italy up in the Dolomites for a short walk in September. And then will head south, finally, in UK…..I think we may become neighbours!
I hope we are neighbours again and can take another walk. Enjoy the Dolomites next month
