Day 29 – Rag Doll

Augsburg to Reinhardshofen, 18Km

I feel like one of those rag dolls that won’t stand up, whatever you do to it.

Yesterday I had a rest day at the home of Robert & Michaela. I met them last year in France where we walked for a week or so to Le Puy-en-Velay. They made me pots of tea and fine home cooking. Michaela went to the village bakery to get the fresh German bread. Robert produced a clean sheet of paper and we made a more relaxed plan to get me over the Bavarian Alps to the Bodensee, as they call Lake Constance.

My new plan has shorter distances and the possibility of taking the Kneipp Cure in Bad Wörishofen. Sebastian Kneipp (17 May 1821 – 17 June 1897) was a German Catholic priest and one of the forefathers of the naturopathic movement. He developed a whole system of healing and opened several hospitals in Bad Wörishofen. Today, his water therapy remains popular so when I reach the spa towns ahead, I’ll sign up. I’ve no doubt he has a treatment for post Covid syndrome and I hope we shall discover more about Fr Kneipp in the coming days.

Robert, Michaela and I walked together for the first few kilometres this morning and then, after a tearful farewell, I set off into the forest where Jakobsweg led me safely to the Landgasthof Grüner Baum, a family run guest house. Robert phoned ahead so they were expecting me and they produced, without delay, a large Löwenbräu.

  1. What you need Tim for those “ragged” legs is a hearty Scottish breakfast in the Wickers World Cafe, followed by an exhilarating walk by the sea, followed by afternoon tea at Morags Cafe, A glorious day here in Caithness.

    • That’s so true! I enjoyed a hearty meal in Wickers World Cafe and the sea walk. I must return to experience Morags Cafe. Your photos looked very tempting

  2. Hope you start feeling better now. A floppy rag doll needs extra stuffing. Feed yourself up and get plenty of rest.

Relieved to read you’ve made a more relaxed plan which includes taking care of Mind, Body & Spirit. 💟

Looking forward to hearing about your experiences of a therapeutic approach to the rigours of long distance walking!

    Happier trails dear Tim. 🫂

  4. The spas will be great. Just pray the German etiquette for using them is not the same as they have for their saunas…🫣

  5. Also glad you have revised your walking plans Tim. Post COVID symptoms can be hard to shake off. Much better to take it easy, feed yourself up, dose yourself up with the Kneipp cure (whatever that entails) and finish the day with a Lowenbrau.
