Day 30 – Summer’s End

Reinhardshofen to Ettringen, 25Km

Today was the last hot day of summer. The temperature has soared into the high twenties every day so far but that’s all about to change. Rain is now falling and so is the temperature. By Thursday a maximum of 10 degrees is forecast.

Last night’s guest house, Landgasthof Grüner Baum, was situated next to the church and its clock chimed loudly every quarter of an hour. There was just one strike at 15 minutes past the hour so I got most of my sleep between the top and bottom of the hour when the double strike kicked in. The innkeeper said it was a tradition and that you don’t notice them after a week or so.

The church is dedicated to St James. Having been kept awake for half the night, I would have liked to have seen inside but it didn’t open until 9:00 and by then I was well on my way. It wasn’t only the church that was closed; today being a Sunday, everything is closed so it’s a cappuccino free day.

I walked through another Bavarian forest. It was a nature reserve which looked much the same as all the other forests but with a few more information boards, rest huts and chapels. The wet days start tomorrow so I’m hoping for more nature reserves.

Today’s first village was Klimmach where a memorial plaque on a house brought me down to earth:

This is where the evacuation [death] march from the Augsburg-Pfersee branch of the Dachau concentration camp ended in the last days of the war in April 1945.
In remembrance and as a warning

Today’s nature reserve. The shelter protects a deep well
A handy rest hut with a pilgrim stamp for the adjoining Justina chapel
It’s harvest time for the maize animal feed
Birkach sleeping ahead

  1. So roughly about 6 days to Lake Constance ?

    • It’s about 175Km to Bregenz and I’ve planned 9 more walking days plus a rest day on Thursday. I decided to reduce my daily distances because of the Covid

      • Sounds good Tim – I wasn’t sure where on Lake Constance you were headed. Take care and enjoy walking in the rain – can be very refreshing!

Hello Tim, We are all enjoying the blog, from next door.

    • That’s nice to hear from you. I just have to get over the Bavarian Alps then it’s downhill all the way
