Day 5 – Nature in the Archipelago

Nagu to Korpo, 22Km

Today’s walk took me across Nagu and Korpo islands and I took my third ferry between them. It’s getting difficult to identify the names of all these islands because there are so many of them and they are often grouped together to make things more manageable.

I’m still struggling with breakfast in Finland. I’m used to taking a bowl of granola and adding milk. In Finland you take a bowl of yoghurt and sprinkle a little granola on top. Next came a plate of 5 hard boiled eggs, lettuce leaves, a few slices of cucumber, tomato and red pepper and slices of processed cheese. I made a packed lunch with the bread rolls and cheese and left the eggs. Breakfast in Sweden is excellent so hopefully the Swedish influence will take over soon.

It was a fine nature walk today along dirt tracks, forests, open countryside, a bit of farmland and occasional coastal beaches. I managed to see all five types of animal: mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians and fish. The temperature was cooler today and there was some wind but the sky was clear. I actually received an alert during the night about the wind.

I met a man walking his two daughters and I stopped for a chat. Like so many Finns, he owned a summer house nearby to escape the stresses of life in Turku and they were interested in my quest for St Olav. I asked him if there was a Starbucks ahead but the humour was lost.

A pair of ferries plied the short channel between the two islands and I stood in a gap between the trucks while we crossed. There was no nature trail on Korpo, just a road with bursts of heavy traffic every 15 minutes when the ferry docked. I walked half way to Korpo “town” then caught the bus when it came along.

  1. Eggs for breakfast? Finns are clearly very strange, but don’t worry – the pickled fish awaits in Sweden.

    • My needs are modest. A little cereal, some croissants and pastries, bread, marmalade and I’m happy. Five eggs?

Is this a walk or a summer cruise you’re doing? Hope the breakfasts pick up a bit otherwise you’ll run out of flapjacks…

    • It’s both! Lots of walking interspersed with these charming ferries between the islands. I hope it gains in popularity

Thanks for the lichen pic Tim, a carpet of it!
Are the slithery wildlife elements of the venomous kind?

    • The lichen were so much better yesterday. I should have taken a photo. That was just a grass snake. Adders are very common here but I’ve not seen one yet

    Hi Tim

The name of islands isn’t a problem after your pilgrimage in Japan. Tne names were more difficult . I enjoy photos of lichen.

    • Everything is easier than Japan!! I will try for more lichen photos

  5. Beautiful pictures Tim! You are a little fussy when it comes to breakfast aren’t you! Is it making you appreciate Japanese breakfast more now? Also sounds like Finns are not appreciating your great British sense of humour😆

    • No. I’m too old and stuck in my ways to start eating lettuce for breakfast. The only Japanese Breakfast I like is the band. I think they may have been in Glastonbury
