It was a shame to leave the seaside this morning, just as the weather turned nice. I was getting used to the German beach style and might have rented one of those beach things for a week or two. But Lübeck beckoned so Robert, Michaela and I set off from our apartment, stopped at a cafe for breakfast and then we started walking. The walk was memorable for its lack of emotional engagement. Actually, Robert found a short diversion through a very beautiful nature reserve but that was it. The rest of the way was along a busy road but never mind, here we are in Lübeck in a charming period apartment outside the central UNESCO old town so it escaped the worst of the war damage.

We arrived in Lübeck mid afternoon and our intention was to go out and explore the Old Town after a quick shower. I had a quick shower and they had a quick nap so the exploration is deferred until tomorrow.

There is so much to do and I have the best part of two days to do it. Top of our list is a short river boat tour which must surely remind us that the river was the border between West and East Germany (and Lübeck was on which side and why?). Then it must be the cathedral. But we must leave time to visit the houses of Willy Brandt, Thomas Mann and Gunter Grass. And we must visit St Peter’s Church and its observation platform from where, it is said, you can see the little beach things on the Baltic Sea coast. And all the Hanseatic heritage. And also some WW2 memorials and graves. That’s my list and I don’t suppose I’ll do half of it.

16 consecutive days of walking from Copenhagen

You’re trying to confuse us with the upside down map, but whichever way you look at it, you’ve reached the end of the road. Again. Congratulations Tim, another fascinating and unique interpretation of a historic, perhaps less well trodden, pathway.

    • I can still remember my geography teacher drumming it into us that every map must have a key and a north indicator. Google maps could use a refresher. Sorry for the confusion. I often felt upside down

Well done, enjoy a rest day. Probably got there just in time as your weather forecast doesn’t look good!

    • thanks and I plan to enjoy it however much I see. The weather forecast always looks not good. I wonder what it forecast just before the last ice age

Kia ora, Tim, well done on completing another great walk. I’ve enjoyed every kilometre of it and learned a lot. Great writing and fabulous photos. On your list of things to do in Lubeck I note that you haven’t included Bruckner’s 8th Symphony in Lubeck Cathedral which you described in your preamble as the finale of your latest stroll. I hope it is still happening. Now I have to wait another year before I can enjoy reading about your adventures. Travel home safely. Kia kaha, Vicky.
