Day 11 – A night on the farm

Thun to Rüeggisberg, 28Km and 676 elevation gain.

We’re blessed with another fine walk today. The sun was shining, the landscape was stunning, the plants are all flowering, the birds were singing and we even heard a few cuckoos. It was everything you could want from a walk across Switzerland, in fact we have extended the experience, perhaps unnecessarily, by staying on a farm this evening. It’s a proper farm too. Not one of those fancy places selling rural artefacts. Our room has been constructed in the corner of a barn and it’s easy to find because it’s right by the compost heap. You could find it with your eyes shut. That will be useful during the night if I need the WC because it’s in the next barn across the road and I don’t have a torch. I might improvise on the WC and find something closer.

The best thing about today was meeting Ruedi again. Paul and I met Ruedi on our walk to Rome and he lives near here so it was wonderful when he found us this morning on his bike. He collected us in his car this evening and took us to a lovely restaurant for a Swiss rosti meal and we shared our memories of walking to Rome and discussed how the world has changed since we last met. There was no option for any dinner on the farm so it was extra appreciated.

After dinner we walked to the viewpoint to look back at the day’s walk from Thun as the sun was setting. A lady was playing the Alpine Horn nearby which I suppose is a normal thing to do up here so we stopped to listen to the notes coming out and drifting across the valley. It could only be Switzerland.

  1. It was a great pleasure to have dinner with you. Thank you for your company 😁. I wish you a good continuation on the Via Jacobi towards the West.

Thunderstorms, Alpine Horns, cuckoos and cow-bells…can’t beat a quiet walk in the country… Your daily posts are brilliant – keep them coming.

    • Thanks Dave, there is much music in the air in Switzerland

  3. Now we would all love to hear tales of your attempting the Alpenhorn – we look forward 👍

    • The Swiss love to bring their Alpenhorns up into the hills but I doubt they’d appreciate me having a go. I’d love to try one

The farm compost heap could hide all manner of sins…

If the Alpenhorners won’t let you have a go, you could always yodel along…I’m sure they’d appreciate your vocal accompaniment. 🎶 🤭

    • I was just thinking the same thing during the night! Keep away from compost heaps in farmyards
