Day 6 – Rheinbach, eventually

Bonn to Rheinbach, 30Km

Germany has experienced extremely heavy rainfall in the past several weeks but that seems to have finished and now it’s warming up. The temperature bobbed around the mid twenties today, plenty hot enough for me. Tomorrow, 31 is forecast which is unpleasant, even while watching the tennis at Wimbledon with a bowl of strawberries and cream.

Today, I liked the forest best. The path was clear and well signed and there were several attractive huts for wet weather and lost children.

Today’s walk was very scenic and whoever designed it must be congratulated. They went to a lot of trouble to lead me to places I might otherwise have missed. A lazy person would have taken a straight line from Bonn to Rheinbach via Duisdorf, about 19Km. Instead we zigzagged our way north west to avoid a bit of traffic and then through a large forest before heading south through wheat fields and then west again to see some nice German villages. Total distance 30Km. It’s the longest stage of the pilgrimage although it soon becomes a bit hilly, to compensate.

Hi Tim, A long walk but blue sky to compensate . Where will you watch England tomorrow? Or not!

    • Hi Cath, The blue sky is wonderful and it was a fine day today. It’s the temperature that’s a worry. I’ll try to watch the England match somewhere but hopefully not with a crowd of England fans

  2. I am glad it has cleared up there for you. It is doing the opposite here! That zigzag route sounds great and varied. Enjoy 😊

    • Hi Suzi, I saw some grim photos of Wimbledon but at least Mandy won’t have to water the garden.

Morning Tim, while it’s hard work walking in the heat your sunshiny photos are a great antidote to our current midwinter gloom and foggy mornings. Good to see a golden Camino symbol too!

    • Hi Philippa, the changing seasons add so much variety to life but it’s always risky walking in Europe in July. It’s only for a few days so hopefully it won’t get any hotter

  4. Hi Tim – A good distance today! Be careful tomorrow – you probably have not experienced the expected temperatures for a while.

    • Hi David, hopefully an early start will avoid the hottest part of the day

Love the trail provided, & you utilised, the etymologically appropriate ‘zig zag’.

A long day but by the looks of your photos, the scenery would have helped the kms glide on by.

Careful in the heat tomorrow & onwards…perhaps you will redeem yourself for the transgression of Day 4! 🍦🍨

    • Hi Karen, I’m an afternoon ice cream person so the timing doesn’t always work but when it does, it’s heaven

  6. So are you going to watch the football today in one of those empty bars and more importantly who are you going to support?

    • The Germans are taking down their flags and the special Euro 2024 items have gone from the menus. In Germany they support whoever France is playing.

      • Nick Pegram

Gosh aren’t the Germans like us 🙂

  7. I do love the little huts. Always a welcome sight.

    • Indeed Jenny, the huts and their contents are most welcome, even during a stroll of the market
