Day 19 – A night in Wernfels castle

Neukatzwang to Wernfels, 27Km

Who doesn’t like a night in a 13th century castle, even if it’s a youth hostel, packed with school children? Fortunately I have my own room in the teachers’ wing. It’s the only accommodation in the area so they also accept bona fide pilgrims with fully stamped credentials.

The bell for dinner sounded at 6pm sharp and I shuffled into one of the castle towers where I was diverted from the long benches to a tiny annex where a table was laid for one. However we all took our place in the queue for the salad and then a plate of goulash with spätzle, a local delicacy and much loved by the Bavarians. It works well in a youth hostel, washed down with a refreshing tumbler of water.

On this pilgrimage I’m walking south across Bavaria from Nuremberg to Bregenz on Lake Constance. It’s another Jakobsweg bringing pilgrims from Germany and Czech towards Spain. As I’ve discovered, pilgrims are few but I’m following the little Camino shell over hills and through valleys, stamping my credential and enjoying the many pilgrim rest places out in the beautiful countryside.

Today was rather hot at 27 degrees and the kilometres passed slowly, interrupted by a series of pleasant villages. There are less flowers than I saw last month but the corn is nearly ready for harvest. The highlight was the small town of Abenberg where I ate a cheese roll and drank a bottle of beer in anticipation of the dry evening to come.

Schwabach. It was a difficult day for the camera
The landscape is getting a bit tired in late August
Pilgrim rest place
Arable farming
Corn cobs almost ripe for picking
Another Bavarian village
My path through the forest
I almost lost it
At last, some animals
My castle for tonight

  1. Looks very beautiful! Will you have to sing around the campfire?

    • The boys are playing with a football and the girls are doing handstands. Way too hot for a campfire, mercifully

  2. I wonder how many steps a day you are doing? Probably more than the recommended 8000. Hope you are enjoying the walk.

Kia ora, Tim. Saw the horses in the distance. Thanks. Is the corn human fodder, animal fodder or for biofuel? Saw it on the VF and it was for biofuel. Great countryside photos, Kia kaha.

    • That’s an interesting question, I’ve no idea. I’ve often thought farmers should put notices on their fields just to say what they are growing and why. It would help us city boys who are interested but lack knowledge

    Hi Tim

I’m happy to read you again , and look your photos it ‘ s a real pleasure . Do you see germans cats? I think the corn is fodder animals it’ s look like my parents had in our fields…but it’s just a suggestion.

    good pilgrimage Tim.

    • Hello Huguette, I see a few cats but they are very shy. I’ll try to take a photo. The animals will be happy eating all that corn
