Day 34 – Foot Massage

Bad Grönenbach Rest Day

This is a good rest day. I idled away an hour or two in the breakfast room and then retired to my room to telephone the next few guesthouses to secure my bed for the night. Shock horror! They were all full. I can’t remember ever seeing a full guesthouse. Normally I’m the only guest. So I spent the next few hours looking at bus timetables. Unlike London, where buses come every 3 to 4 minutes, the question here is whether there is a bus at all and, if so, what days does it run. The challenge for tomorrow is to walk 26Km to a bleak spot called Hölzlers to catch a bus to Kempten at 15:06.

After that administrative burden, I wandered into the town centre for a cappuccino and an unnecessarily large slice of plum cake. I also went to the ATM which is a bit of a novelty because we don’t use cash anymore in England. The payment card hasn’t really caught on in Germany.

Today’s highlight was the foot massage. I’m not sure what to make of it. I was expecting candles and some soothing rare ointments to be gently rubbed in while Brian Eno’s ambient music wafted through the air. Not a bit of it. It was more like a session at the Physio except there was nothing wrong with my feet. She pushed and pulled in every direction until I felt obliged to agree that they were now much better. “Did I have trouble eating soup and salad”, she asked. I don’t know why.

  1. Maybe the physio’s sister runs the local cafe and reported on the limping stranger who eats only croissants and cake?

    • I think maybe there were bits of lettuce and soup between my toes

We don’t use cash any more? There speaks someone from cosmopolitan Surrey! Come to bow and arrow country where we’ve only just stopped bartering. And as for buses…what are these? Our once-a-week bus was axed more than ten years ago.

    • Well of course I use cash to pay the builder. But I’m sorry to hear about your bus. The Government is more concerned about what type of car you buy rather than providing a public transport system. I’ve seen an on-demand bus service here which serves the rural community very well

  3. Sounds more like you had a reflexology treatment!😂 They can be brutal you should now drink lots of water to flush out all the toxins. Good for all organs apparently.

    • I think you’re right. It was more brutal than pleasurable. She told me to drink lots of water
