Day 39 – To the shores of Lake Constance

Scheidegg to Lindau, 22Km

Last night the innkeeper took my 80 euros in cash and I asked the time of breakfast. “There isn’t any”, she said.

The Scheidegg bakery opened at 6:00 and I was there at 7:00 for my usual. I don’t have to tell you that a light rain was falling but nothing could spoil the excitement of today’s walk down to Lindau on Lake Constance. I religiously followed Jakobsweg almost all the way because it ends in Lindau and, like a guest who has overstayed their welcome, I was prolonging the experience in anticipation of the joy of the farewells. Except for one bit where Jakobsweg inexplicably and needlessly departed into the hills only to rejoin me about 100m ahead.

All the churches were locked on the way, even though it was a Tuesday. One little chapel high on the pastures was equipped with iron railings inside a little porch which normally allows entry inside the chapel but prevents you from vandalising the deity. However, even the porch was locked.

The path was soaking wet and slippery, the river was full and the cattle looked sorry for themselves. And then, all of a sudden, the sun appeared, the temperature rose, the crazy weather system moved into Italy and, finally, I crested a hill and there ahead of me was Lake Constance.

I walked through extensive apple orchards where every fruit looked like the individually selected specimens sold in Harrods food hall. I picked one and it was the best apple I’ve ever eaten.

Jakobsweg led me into Lindau then vanished without so much as a goodbye. Tomorrow I’m walking one last day to Bregenz in Austria where I’ve found a hotel with laundry facilities.

    Wow…stunning photos Tim.

The Bavarian woodland shot is my favourite…looks so atmospheric…which is due of course to that pesky rain. 😏

One day to go…enjoy it. And although I dont want to put the mozz on you, well done on completing another epic walk which threw up more than it’s usual share of challenges.🏅

    • It certainly feels like it’s done, arriving at the Lake, but there’s one more day tomorrow

  2. Enjoy your last day’s walk Tim. I hope the sun continues to shine for you.

  3. Nearly all of your great photos are of the kind of views which, when we were young, used to adorn boxes of chocolates!
When or why did that stop?
I guess it was somewhat to do with the need for strong ‘brand placement’?? Tim

    • I remember those chocolate boxes well. They inspired my photography although I can’t get the colours to be quite so vibrant

  4. You realise that if you nick an apple over there, the penalty is to stand with it on your head as target practice? Are you still there?

    • Yes thank goodness but you are confusing Germany with Switzerland where William Tell, father of the Swiss Confederacy, developed his crossbow skills using an apple and a volunteer. I won’t be picking anymore apples when I get to Switzerland

    Congratulations, Tim.
