Day 40 – Goodbye to Germany

Lindau to Bregenz, 12Km

I feel like a local here on Lake Constance having started my 2023 pilgrimage just across the lake in Konstanz, confusingly in Germany but surrounded by Switzerland. After a 12Km stroll along the lake shore this morning, I’m now in Bregenz in Austria and another short hop will bring me to Switzerland.

It was a pleasant walk from Lindau, t-shirt weather again. Across the lake, the snow covered Alps glistened in the sun and the swans floated in the water, knowing they were protected in their nature reserve. I walked past a little sign marking the Austrian border but everything looks the same as Germany.

So it’s goodbye to Germany and the Jakobsweg. There were a few little challenges along the way and I nearly threw the towel into the ring at Bad Grönenbach but I’m glad I finished it, if only to meet a couple of pilgrims. Thank you for following my journeys through southern Germany and for all the comments which I always enjoy reading and which I appreciate immensely.

well done Tim. Writing this from the middle of the Aegean it seems like a different world away but in fact it’s (quite) a few miles away. As usual I really enjoyed your blog and am looking forward to more banal chats with you about the state of the road outside our houses and if you should go flor the new Rega MM cartridge! Again, well done mate! Best, Alan.

    • Hello Alan, I trust you’re enjoying life in the middle of the Aegean and I hope the weather is kind to you. I have to put the last few days aside and remember how lucky I’ve been with the weather for both these walks in Germany. I’m taking a few more days in St Gallen and St Moritz and after that I should hopefully still be good to wander up the road to further explore the new cartridge. Cheers, Tim

  2. great effort Tim ! What an achievement !

    • Hi Linda, thanks and I’d agree it was a bit of a mental challenge if not a physical one. Tim

  3. Hey Tim, well done! I really enjoy reading your adventures, in fact, i just re-read your book on your 2018 pilgrimage with Paul. You are a brilliant and colorful writer!!!

    • Hi Reva, you’re too kind and for sure 2018 was a brilliant and colorful walk thanks to you generously donating Paul as my spiritual leader and sometimes porter. It was an unforgettable experience and I often return to the book of the walk to relive those happy memories. I hope you enjoy your vacation in Italy and that you eventually find a flight there. Tim

  4. You have walked more pilgrimages than anyone I know, and there’s a book just waiting to be published of all your Camino’s. I look forward very much to catching up again Tim, sometime this autumn. Best wishes and buen camino.

    • Thanks Torin and I very much look forward to seeing you too. I believe there is a very special place in the next world for someone who has walked so many pilgrimages and it will be right next to a cappuccino machine

  5. Well done. Safe journey home. Tim

    • Thanks Tim and I’m looking forward to catching up with you now that you are back in my neck of the woods

  6. Walkmag

    Hi Tim

Well done , Tim. We too enjoy reading your daily update .

  9. Well done. Don’t catch anything else on the way home.

    • Thanks Roger, that’s good advice. I’ll wear a mask. See you at Sandown

  10. I believe the trek to the Jolly Farmer can be quite difficult. Especially if it’s your round. Which it is.

    • …and from there to the curry house which will be even more painful if it’s my 70th birthday which it is

  11. cathgriffith

Well done Tim , perseverance despite the weather. Where to next year ? Cath and Dave

    • It was the closest I’ve come to giving up when Covid sapped my energy, the weather turned bad and I lost my appetite for schnitzel. But I’m so glad I made it to the end. My grandmother was born in Bregenz so that’s why I persevered

Thank you Tim for all your posts and beautiful photographs! Good to know that the swans are protected, no wonder they look so peaceful. After such a strenuous pilgrimage I guess you’re appreciating the serenity. Just one question, could the blurry pair in the last photo be fellow pilgrims?! Have a safe trip home.

    • Hi Philippa, the path was busy with cyclists on the Lake Constance circuit but it was the friendliest day with several people stopping to ask me about my pilgrimage. I exchanged smiles with one couple with backpacks coming towards me and after we passed, we both looked round to see the shell and burst out laughing!

Kia ora, Tim. Thank you for another interesting journal of another of your wanderings (planned, I know) in the world. I really enjoyed seeing the pictures of the landscapes and your quirky humour. I look forward to my next instalment of vicarious adventures. Kia kaha.

    • Hi Vicky, planned to the last cappuccino. Thanks for keeping me going with your many contributions. Tim

What does not kill us makes us stronger.

I can sense your relief Tim, but a fine conclusion in all respects. Good job!

    “This too shall pass”

    One of my favourite quotes as it conveys two meanings;

the bad shall pass so get through it & the good shall pass so make the most of it. 🤗

    • Hi Karen, so good to read your daily encouragements. Just like life itself, a pilgrimage shuffles you along until it drops you off at the end. Cheers, Tim

Tim. Once again I’ve really enjoyed your daily posts and the interesting contrasts between your experience and mine currently on the via de la plata. It’s time to put your feet up and plan the next one! Cheers, Andrew

    • Hi Andrew, gosh! The Plata is a formidable challenge and I wish you the best journey along it. Why can’t we stop doing these things? Tim

Well done. This one certainly had its challenges. I have enjoyed reading your daily updates supported by great photos. Looking forward to your next pilgrimage.

    • Thank you Lucy. Good name you’ve got there. Hopefully see you soon even though we’re probably through with weddings, at least for the time being

  17. Well done Tim,

i’ve enjoyed following along on your journey and seeing the beautiful landscapes and churches. Hearing about the history and facts from the area.

Can’t wait to see where you go next.

Have you walked in Ireland yet?

    Dawny xx

    • Hi Dawn, the important thing is not to rush otherwise you can miss so much along the way. I’m glad you enjoyed the journey and no, I haven’t walked in Ireland. Cheers, Tim

Kia ora, Tim. Have a happy birthday. I see that the UK is having a ‘last hurrah’ of summer so enjoy it. You deserve it after persevering through such a challenging walk. Kia kaha.

  19. Well done Tim. I am so pleased the sun shone for you for your last day. It certainly looked beautiful.
    Suzi

    • Thanks Suzi, the good weather has returned and everything is back to normal. It was a lovely walk
