Day 23 – A Light Drizzle to Start the Day

Maribo to Rødbyhavn, 21Km

It’s the first time I can remember a stand off between a Camino path and a Cathedral. Coming out of my hotel this morning, I turned right and walked about 200m to Maribo cathedral. Had I turned left and walked about 300m I would have come to the Danish Pilgrim trail. A strange snub especially as there was a brass Camino shell embedded in the entrance. It wasn’t the most exciting of cathedrals and I soon found the trail to start my final day in Denmark and a nice walk down to the port for one more ferry.

Heavy rain was forecast and there was a light but persistent drizzle in the air. I soon reached the woods. When I emerged, the rain was much heavier. Waterproof clothing is effective in showers but it’s not a diving suit and soon the rain was flowing down my neck. I was cold and wet.

I reached a long straight path, the former Maribo to Rødbyhavn railway. Shame it wasn’t still running. It went on forever. The faster I walked, the more it went on. Eventually there was a bend in the path. I was in Holeby and decided to abandon the walk. The taxi app refused to oblige me so I went into the store for some suggestions. There was a bus back to Maribo and then another to the port. But Frank, who was in the queue behind me, kindly gave me a lift for 10Km down to the boat. He said he’d never been to Lübeck.

The ferries sail every 30 minutes for the 45 minutes crossing to Germany and they’re packed with trucks and cars. I was the only foot passenger and I bought a ticket and jumped on the next boat, without the opportunity to say goodbye to Denmark.

This ferry route is a vital link to Germany but the Danes are now building a tunnel for the 18Km crossing at a cost of €7.4b and Germany will pay a further €800m to connect their end to their autobahn network.

So now I’m in Puttgarden, Germany and ready for the short stroll down to Lübeck. It’s a path called the Via Scandinavica but deep down, we know it as our old friend, the Jakobsweg. Will no one rid me of this troublesome priest?

Maribo Cathedral, a bit two dimensional
The weather forecast always predicted rain
A day of straight paths
The old railway line that wouldn’t end
Bye bye Denmark

  1. Looks quite nice despite the rain. You should be getting loyalty points on the ferries by now

    • I know. It’s sad, I’m done with the ferries now but there’s one big bridge still to come

  2. I got a question on this saturdays Times Quiz correct thanks to you Tim.
Picture of a gateway with two elephants!

    • That’s a good quiz question, probably the only one I would have got right

  3. Tassie Kaz

Did you manage to dry off while on the ferry…or wasn’t the crossing long enough?
    Willkommen in Deutschland!

    • I changed into a dry shirt which got me to the hotel. The rain was torrential and just finds its way through the waterproofs. Even the pockets were full of water
