Clanfield to Portsmouth, 19Km
There’s not much left of the South Downs after Clanfield so today was a rather dreary walk through the Portsmouth conurbation, down to the ferry.
The Rising Sun didn’t offer breakfast, unlike its namesake, down in New Orleans. I made a cup of tea then left via the back fire exit, as directed. I noticed it had withstood multiple attempts at a break in.
Just a couple of highlights to report today. First was Cowplain, a town with a small parade of shops. It offered everything the locals could want including a convenience store, dog grooming shop, someone offering cures with oriental herbs etc and, glory be, a Costa Coffee. One medium cappuccino and a blueberry muffin please!
After that, I made good progress to the sea and stumbled upon the day’s second highlight, the newly inaugurated England Coast Path. I followed it for a few hundred metres behind a warehouse and through a car park. Good luck to anyone planning to walk the 2700 miles of it.
I’m now in the ferry terminal. Tomorrow is a day at sea, hopefully without WiFi so it’s goodbye until Saturday on the Camino del Norte.

Perfect walking weather. Someone is smiling down on you. Happy sailing!
Yes but the rain in Spain awaits
