Day 13 – Catalan Architecture in Cantabria

Santillana del Mar to Comillas, 24Km

Fine weather returned today for a pleasant walk across the coastal landscape of Cantabria. There was lots of mixed agriculture with fields ploughed for the next crop and a variety of livestock including alpacas. All the animals are in fields where they belong and the pilgrims walk happily on paths where we belong.

I’m passing quite a few new housing developments in Cantabria. Some are typically modern while others are the result of impressive modern architecture. I’ll take some pictures if I see some more.

Spain has always been a step ahead when it comes to architecture. Antoni Gaudi left a great legacy in Barcelona but he also designed a villa here in Comillas. The town is graced with extraordinary 19th century architecture as a result of a fortune made in the Americas which was used to commission a group of Catalan architects to produce some extraordinary buildings.

Comillas is another popular coastal resort which means pilgrims are secondary to holiday makers. But there are many restaurants in the old town by the church so I secured lunch once again.

  1. I wonder if you need planning permission in Spain?

    • Something makes me think not. I guess that’s the legacy of a dictatorship

Kia Ora, Tim, Oh, Wow! What a stunning building that was Gaudi’s home. Lucky you to see it. Kia kaha, Vicky

    • Gaudi’s buildings are all works of art. There’s only a few outside Barcelona. Apparently it stood empty and derelict for decades before it was restored which seems hard to believe

That looks like a really good day on the way, sun, beautiful scenery & architecture, and food when you needed it!

    • Really good and shorter than the previous few walks. It felt like a rest day!

  4. Hi Tim – For some reason your blog has stopped sending me updates. Gaudi’s family home quite remarkable

    • Hi David, Gaudi’s family house was really amazing. The outside was covered in many flowers. The master bedroom caught the morning sun. There was a floor for the man of the house and a minaret, presumably just in case of another invasion. I don’t know what’s happened to your email alerts. I hope I’m not in your spam folder. Tim

Tha alpacas are nice but a bad nature. We have in the village an animal’s park with 3 alpacas. Their fleece is so soft but they soit ,” green’ on you if you try to touch them 😉.

    • Hi Huguette, I’ll remember not to touch the alpaca! I like their wool in the winter. Tim

  6. Wow, these photos are spectacular. And I especially like the first one. My goddaughter raises Alpalcas and they are very affectionate.

    • Thanks. I’ve been eating some meals that have been cooked with Asturian cheese!
