Day 22 – Breakfast in Spain

Avilés to Muros de Nalón, 21Km

Avilés was an attractive town with a fine old town square, town hall and many restored buildings. Naturally there was a bar open at 7am for breakfast. It’s one of the things you take for granted in Spain. Try finding anywhere open in London at such an early hour and only charging a couple of euros for coffee and croissant.

This was another day of walking inland from the coast so the scenery was more eucalyptus woodlands and cattle pastures. This is certainly not unpleasant but less enticing than the endless beaches of earlier days nor indeed the industrial relics of yesterday.

Like most pilgrims, I’ve stopped in Muros de Nalón (photo above), another pleasant little place. There’s only one restaurant and frankly it’s the sort of place you’d skip in preference for another place, if there was one. But there isn’t. The owner knows it, the staff know it and so do the customers. We’re grateful for it. I’m avoiding anything Asturian on the menu which narrows it down quite a lot. Salade Mixta again and, if I’m good, rice pudding.

  1. Excellent progress Tim, and the pics make us feel we’re there with you. Only the equivalent of your house to Exeter to go…….meanwhile console yourself with the fact that Spanish tomatoes are the best!

    • That’s very comforting Mike. Or perhaps 350 round trips to the Jolly Farmer

    Kia Ora, Tim,

Thanks for the horses. Yes, you’re walking in attractive surroundings especially through the woodlands and I envy you. The salade mixta looks very artistic. How many days until you meet the Camino Frances? Kia kaha.

    • How many days to the Camino Frances? About 10. Too many!

!0 days is not too many. The time will come when all you can do is read someone about else’s adventures and reminisce about those days when you were able to walk. That’s why I enjoy reading your blogs. Kia kaha

      • A very poignant comment Vicky. So true. I will spend those post walking years just reading my own blogs

  3. Tassie Kaz

It certainly is beautiful & varied countryside.

Are they your chippies in the last pic Tim? Or are you only fessing up to the salad? 🤭

    • Haha I thought you’d notice my side order. The waiter forgot my bread so, still being hungry, I ordered the potatoes but only ate half of them. I did eat a whole rice pudding afterwards which I was told was the best on the planet and he told me he ate 4 Kg of it every week
