Day 32 – of 34

Monasterio de Sobrado dos Monxes to Arzúa, 22Km

I said goodbye to my snoring friend this morning. It would be wrong to suggest he’s the only person who snores on the Camino. In fact, everyone snores except for me. But as we’ve practically shared beds for the past few days, I’ve rather grown used to the rhythmic sounds through the night. Anyway I’m now on the Camino Frances where almost every building is an albergue or pension. So I was a little more than surprised to find him once again in the next bunk.

When I woke up at 6:15 this morning, I found the room almost empty. It’s a short day today but most of the Norte people are following a diversion to postpone their interaction with the Francés people, until the final day. I exited the monastery and entered the bar outside which was also empty.

After breakfast I set off into the rain. There’s little more I can say about the scenery without repeating myself. I stopped half way for a coffee. I was cold and wet and the day felt more like 35Km

My albergue scored Very Good on Booking.com and people praised the welcoming man on reception. My welcome was more restrained. He told me I had booked for the previous day. I showed him my booking details on the phone but he produced his hand written ledger which not only showed my booking for the day before but confirmed that I had stayed the night. More discussion if not argument followed and I was just about to unleash the force of Silicon Valley upon him when he relented and gave me my paper sheet and pillow case. Shoes here, wash there, no backpack on the bed, have a good stay, 20 euros please.

Cows, eucalyptus etc.
For sale, right on the Camino del Norte. Albergue opportunity?
Halfway bar
Keep going
Eucalyptus again
Tonight’s Albergue Santo
Delicious lunch of very posh confit cod drenched with Arzúa cheese, on potatoes

  1. It all looks very familiar Tim. In 2017, I walked through green Galicia in the rain. Your snoring man will forever be remembered! Just two days now to this journey’s end.

  2. Finally…..ha! a dish w/cheese. What does it taste like? It looks like a nice melty one.

    • It was so well cooked at a low temperature to keep the cod flaky. The cheese is produced here and is well known. That’s why I tried it. Shame it doesn’t photograph well

  3. You haven’t included a photo of a cat yet this time.

    • I know. There’s been quite a few cats in recent days. I’ll try tomorrow

I enjoy your photos of landscape , cows and especially Eucalyptus. The trees are Splendid, and Catherine green so radiant. I hope you ‘ll sleep better .

    • Thank you Huguette, I like the Eucalyptus trees too, especially in the rain when you can smell them

Ahhh, Tim. I wondered if reading your blog would make me long for the days of getting out there on a long distance trail. For me, Covid killed it, then my knee killed it.

Although I still immensely enjoy your daily dispatches & photos, with this one, me’s thinking ‘nah, you can keep it, I’m all good!’ 🤣🤗

    • The thing is, long distance walking is never easy but hopefully comes with its own rewards
