It’s time to get back on the Camino, the way of St James. The paths to Santiago de Compostela fan out across Europe, forming a network called the Jakobsweg in German speaking lands. My plan is to start in Bratislava, capital of Slovakia, and walk across Austria and Switzerland towards Le Puy-en-Velay in France, to link up with my previous walks to Santiago de Compostela. However, I don’t have enough days on my Schengen visa to reach Le Puy so I will stop somewhere with a train station and continue another time.
Along the way I will waltz through Vienna, home to Johann Strauss and coffee houses, Salzburg for Mozart and Julie Andrews and then Innsbruck. This is where I will jump on a train to Oberammergau in nearby Germany to see the extraordinary Passion Play. After that I may visit Liechtenstein if I can find it among the mountains. And then it’s Switzerland with its cable cars, funicular railways and paddle steamers, not to mention CERN, birthplace of the www.
